# Doc Notary > Doc Notary (https://www.doc-notary.com) proves that a file existed, unaltered, at a specific moment. It records the file's SHA-256 fingerprint and a timestamp on a public blockchain without putting the file itself on-chain. Anyone can later verify a copy of the file in their browser, free and without an account. Doc Notary is an independent software service based in Pakistan. It is in beta: proofs are currently recorded on the Ethereum Sepolia test network, with a planned move to a production network (paying customers' proofs will be re-recorded there at no extra cost). ## How it works - A signed-in user uploads a file. The service computes its SHA-256 hash and writes the hash, the block time and an optional public label to a smart contract. The service pays the network fee, so users don't need a crypto wallet. - The original file is stored privately (Cloudflare R2) so its owner can download it and a PDF proof certificate later. The filename is never put on-chain. - Fingerprint-only option: the hash is computed in the browser and only the hash is sent and recorded. The file never leaves the user's device, any file size works (for example long videos), and the owner keeps the only copy. - To verify, anyone drops a copy of a file (or pastes a hash) on the site. The hash is computed in the browser; the file never leaves the device. A match means the copy is byte-for-byte identical to what was recorded, and that it existed no later than the recorded time. ## What a proof does and doesn't show - Shows: a file with exactly this content existed by the time of a specific block on the network named on the certificate. - Doesn't show: who created or owns the file, the identity of the person who notarized it, or that nobody had it earlier. It is not a legal notarization and not legal advice. ## Who it's for - Researchers and journals showing when a manuscript, dataset or draft existed (for example before submission or peer review). - Freelancers, designers and writers keeping evidence of when they had their work in hand. - Journalists, documentary makers and eyewitnesses showing which copy of a video, photo or recording is the original: a matching copy is byte-for-byte unchanged since it was recorded, however often it is reposted or edited elsewhere. (It proves the file existed by that time, not where or by whom it was captured; capture-time standards such as C2PA Content Credentials cover that.) ## Plans - Free: 3 notarizations per month, files up to 5 MB, a PDF certificate at the time of notarizing, unlimited verification. - Standard: US$5/month or US$49/year. 25 notarizations per month, files up to 25 MB, notarization history with re-downloadable certificates and originals, email support. Taxes are added at checkout. Payments are processed by Kelviq (merchant of record). Full refund within 14 days of a payment; cancel any time. - Verification is free and unlimited on every plan and needs no account. ## Pages - [Home and verify](https://www.doc-notary.com/): notarize or verify a file - [Pricing](https://www.doc-notary.com/pricing) - [About & Contact](https://www.doc-notary.com/about) - [Terms of Service](https://www.doc-notary.com/terms) - [Privacy Policy](https://www.doc-notary.com/privacy) - [Refund Policy](https://www.doc-notary.com/refund-policy) - Public verify links have the form https://www.doc-notary.com/verify/0x<64-hex-sha256> ## Contact support@doc-notary.com
